A cheerful ringtone arrives at precisely the wrong point in the service
A Silence, Interrupted
A moment of carefully observed silence during this week’s chapel service was broken abruptly by an unexpectedly cheerful phone alarm sounding from somewhere in the middle rows, a genuinely jarring intrusion that several pupils present describe as producing “a kind of collective, barely suppressed panic” as the owner scrambled to locate and silence the device before the moment stretched on any longer than it already had. The alarm, apparently set days earlier for an entirely unrelated reminder and simply forgotten about, chimed with what one witness called “a genuinely upbeat little tune that felt almost comically at odds with the moment.”
A Scramble That Felt Considerably Longer Than It Was
The boy responsible, mortified by the interruption, later admitted the roughly fifteen seconds it took him to locate his phone and silence it “felt like a genuine eternity,” compounded by the fact that his blazer’s inside pocket, where the phone had been stashed, proved considerably harder to access quickly than he had anticipated while seated in a crowded pew. Several nearby pupils reported struggling visibly to contain their own laughter throughout the ordeal, a reaction the chaplain, continuing the service with what several called “genuinely impressive composure,” chose to address only with a brief, good-humoured pause once the silence resumed.
An Apology, Delivered Promptly
The boy responsible sought out the chaplain directly after the service to apologise, an apology the chaplain accepted warmly, reportedly telling him that “these things happen to absolutely everyone eventually, and at least the tune was cheerful.” The boy has since become the subject of good-natured teasing from housemates, several of whom have jokingly asked what the alarm had actually been set to remind him about, a detail he has declined to share.
A Reminder for the Rest of the School
The London Prat understands the chaplain has since gently reminded the whole school, via the usual notices, to double-check phones are fully silenced before entering chapel, a request several pupils have taken, in the words of one, “rather more seriously than usual this particular week.”
A Moment Already Entering Chapel Lore
Whatever the lasting impact on phone habits, several pupils say the incident has already joined a small but growing informal collection of memorable chapel interruptions passed down between year groups, each one, as one boy put it, “somehow funnier in the retelling than it probably was at the actual time.” The boy himself has since made a small, only half-serious ritual of triple-checking his phone before every subsequent chapel service, a habit his housemates say they fully expect to see abandoned within a fortnight.
