About Eton Collge VIP

Welcome to Eton Collge VIP, an independent satirical publication exploring Eton, British education, the British establishment, class, privilege, tradition and the wonderfully peculiar machinery of British public life.

There is one thing you will notice immediately about our name.

It says Eton Collge VIP.

Yes, “Collge.”

That is intentional.

Eton Collge VIP is a satire website. We take one of Britain’s most recognizable institutions, place it under the satirical microscope and see what happens when centuries of tradition collide with modern Britain, politics, technology, celebrity culture and the increasingly strange business of being British.

An Independent Publication

Eton Collge VIP is independently operated and is not the official website of Eton College.

The publication is not affiliated with, operated by, sponsored by, endorsed by or authorized by Eton College.

The purpose of this website is commentary, humor, parody and entertainment.

Our articles may discuss Eton College, its history, traditions, alumni, culture, reputation and place in British society. References to Eton College and other real institutions are made because they are subjects of public interest and legitimate subjects for commentary and satire.

Why Eton?

Few schools have accumulated such an extraordinary cultural reputation.

Eton College was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI. Its original purpose was charitable education: seventy poor scholars were to receive free education, alongside the religious mission associated with the school’s foundation.

Over the centuries, however, Eton developed into something considerably larger in the British imagination.

It became associated with the monarchy, Windsor, politics, government, the British establishment and generations of influential alumni.

Its distinctive traditions became cultural shorthand.

Tailcoats.

The Wall Game.

Fagging.

House rivalries.

Old Etonians.

The playing fields.

The famous Eton accent.

The famous Eton confidence.

And, inevitably, jokes about all of the above.

That makes Eton an irresistible subject for satire.

What We Do

Eton Collge VIP publishes satirical articles inspired by real events, institutions, history and contemporary culture.

Our material may involve:

  • fictional news reports;
  • parody announcements;
  • invented quotations;
  • exaggerated scenarios;
  • absurd institutional policies;
  • fictional characters;
  • political satire;
  • cultural satire;
  • historical humor;
  • commentary about education;
  • observations about British class;
  • jokes about the establishment;
  • and stories that begin with something plausible and then take a sharp turn toward complete nonsense.

The fictional nature of a satirical article is part of the editorial format.

A Long Tradition of Satire

Britain has a particularly distinguished tradition of institutional satire.

From political cartoons and pamphlets to magazines, newspapers, television and modern websites, British humor has long treated powerful institutions as fair game.

Eton Collge VIP operates in that tradition.

We believe that institutions can be examined through humor as well as through conventional commentary.

Sometimes a joke makes an argument more effectively than a lecture.

Sometimes exaggeration reveals something that ordinary description hides.

And sometimes the only reasonable response to British public life is to laugh.

Our Editorial Identity

Eton Collge VIP is deliberately irreverent, but we also want readers to understand what they are reading.

We do not pretend that fictional satire is conventional journalism.

We do not present imaginary events as official Eton College announcements.

We do not claim to speak for Eton College.

We speak in the voice of satire.

Our ambition is straightforward:

Take Britain’s establishment seriously enough to make fun of it.
