Corrections, Complaints & Right of Reply Policy
Eton Collge VIP is committed to maintaining a clear distinction between satire and factual information.
Although our primary purpose is humorous commentary, we take genuine factual errors seriously.
What Is a Correction?
A correction may be appropriate when we publish an objectively incorrect factual statement as factual background.
Examples include an incorrect:
- date;
- name;
- historical event;
- location;
- attribution;
- numerical fact.
What Is Not a Correction?
Satirical invention is not automatically an error.
If we publish an article claiming that Eton has introduced a mandatory course in aristocratic emergency management, that fictional course does not require correction merely because it does not exist.
Likewise, an invented quotation in a satirical story is not a factual quotation that requires correction.
Submitting a Correction
Readers who believe an article contains a genuine factual error should provide:
- the article title;
- the article URL;
- the specific statement;
- an explanation;
- supporting evidence.
We may investigate the claim and determine whether an amendment is appropriate.
Complaints
We welcome serious editorial complaints.
However, disagreement with satire is not necessarily evidence of an editorial error.
Satire can be provocative, uncomfortable, ridiculous or deliberately unfair to an institution in the comic sense.
That is part of its traditional role.
Right of Reply
A person or organization that believes it has been materially misrepresented may contact Eton Collge VIP.
We may consider publishing a response where it contributes useful information or perspective.
We reserve editorial discretion over whether and how responses are published.
Corrections May Include
Where appropriate, we may:
- amend an article;
- add a clarification;
- add an editor’s note;
- publish a correction;
- update historical information;
- publish a response;
- or determine that the original material is adequately supported or clearly satirical.
