An unexpectedly high turnout overwhelms the school’s usual parking arrangements
A Bigger Crowd Than Anyone Planned For
This year’s Founder’s Day celebrations drew what organisers are calling “a genuinely record turnout” of visiting parents and family members, a welcome sign of enthusiasm that nonetheless overwhelmed the school’s usual parking arrangements almost entirely, leaving several members of staff directing an unusually long queue of vehicles for nearly two hours as the designated overflow fields filled considerably faster than anticipated. The school’s events office, reviewing the day afterward, admitted the parking plan had been “based on previous years’ attendance figures that, in hindsight, clearly underestimated just how popular this year’s event was going to be.”
Staff Step In to Manage the Chaos
With the main car park filled well before the morning’s scheduled events had even begun, several masters found themselves pressed into impromptu traffic direction duty, waving cars toward increasingly distant overflow areas with what one visibly exhausted teacher called “considerably more enthusiasm than skill, given that traffic management was never exactly part of my job description.” Several parents, informed of the situation upon arrival, took the delay in reasonably good humour, with one joking that “if this is the worst part of the day, the school is clearly doing something right.”
A Long Walk for Some Families
Families directed to the furthest overflow fields faced a noticeably longer walk to the main event area than usual, a trek several parents undertook while carrying picnic supplies and, in at least one case, a folding chair intended for a grandparent with limited mobility, a situation staff addressed by arranging an impromptu golf buggy shuttle service once the scale of the problem became clear. The improvised shuttle, staff admit, “was not exactly part of the original plan, but it got people where they needed to go.”
Lessons for Next Year
Money, Style & Tech understands the events office has already begun planning a significantly expanded parking arrangement for next year’s celebration, including additional overflow capacity and a permanent shuttle service from the start, rather than one improvised midway through the day.
A Day That Succeeded Despite the Logistics
Whatever the parking difficulties, most families say the actual celebrations more than made up for the earlier delay, with the events office noting, with some relief, that feedback on the day itself remained overwhelmingly positive despite the rocky start. The improvised golf buggy shuttle, in particular, drew unexpected praise from several elderly relatives, with one grandparent reportedly requesting it become a permanent fixture “regardless of how the parking situation eventually gets sorted.”
