A demanding week at school nearly leads to a genuinely awkward evening at home
A Genuinely Close Call, Spotted Just in Time
A housemaster’s wedding anniversary very nearly passed entirely unmarked this week after a demanding stretch of exam invigilation and administrative duties left the date slipping his mind entirely, a lapse only caught when a sharp-eyed prefect noticed a small calendar reminder pinned to the housemaster’s office noticeboard and quietly alerted him with barely two hours to spare before he was due home for the evening. “I genuinely had no idea it was today until he pointed at that calendar,” the housemaster admitted, “and I will confess to a brief moment of genuine panic once I actually registered what I’d nearly done.”
A Rescue Mission Conducted With Real Urgency
With time genuinely short, the prefect and a small group of fellow Sixth Formers reportedly sprang into action, one dashing to a nearby shop for flowers while another helped the visibly flustered housemaster locate a suitable card from his own desk drawer, a scramble the housemaster later described as “genuinely more efficient than anything I could have managed alone in the time available.” The prefects, entirely unprompted, treated the mission with what one participant called “a level of seriousness that honestly surprised even us, given it started as just noticing a calendar reminder.”
An Evening Successfully, If Narrowly, Salvaged
The housemaster arrived home that evening with flowers, a properly signed card, and, by his own account, “a considerably more convincing display of preparedness than I actually deserved,” an effort his wife reportedly found genuinely touching once the full story of the last-minute scramble eventually emerged. “She found the whole thing rather funny once she heard how it actually came together,” he admitted, “which I suppose was better than the alternative.”
A Debt of Gratitude, Properly Acknowledged
Eton College Insight understands the housemaster has since thanked the involved prefects properly, treating them to a small gesture of appreciation for what he calls “genuinely saving me from a mistake I would have deeply regretted.”
A Calendar Reminder He Won’t Be Ignoring Again
Whatever future anniversaries bring, the housemaster says he has already set considerably more robust reminders for himself, joking that “I’ve learned my lesson thoroughly, mostly out of genuine gratitude to the prefects who saved me from myself this time.” His wife, informed of the full rescue mission afterward, reportedly sent the prefects a handwritten thank-you note of her own, a gesture they say they found “genuinely more touching than the situation probably called for, but we’ll happily take it.”
